Saltmarsh is a habitat under threat so it is heartening that we have large areas of it along the Lincolnshire coast and in the Wash where this painting was conceived. The colours can be quite striking if the light is good and this represents one of my favourite ways of working, just letting the paint flow and trying to control it just a little. Often it doesn't work but great fun when it does.
